Nahuel Huapi National Park, Argentina

Nahuel Huapi was South America’s first national park.  It was first designated a national park by the scientist, Francisco “Perito” Moreno in 1903.  Moreno negotiated the border between Chile and Argentina and as a result, the government gave him territory around this lake.  Moreno returned three leagues (nearly 23,000 acres) to the government and asked that a park be created.  In 1922 the park’s size was extended. The Argentine National Park Service was created on October 9, 1934, the same year the railroad reached San Carlos de Bariloche. The park was first named National Park of the South but this name was changed.
